On the afternoon of August 26, 2021, Army Staff Sergeant Ryan Christian Knauss, just 23 years old, was among 13 courageous United States service members and more than 170 civilians killed in a terrorist attack at Abbey Gate outside Hamid Karzai International Airport. The deadly explosion and ensuing gunfire occurred during evacuation operations amid the United States’ hasty withdrawal from Afghanistan after two decades of fighting a war on terrorism. The tragedy brought profound sorrow, grief, and reflection to families, fellow service members, and people around the world mourning the devastating loss of lives during a humanitarian mission.
